Eric still has nightmares about the beatings he got from his mother's
boyfriend. He hasn't made many friends since he entered foster care last
September. Changing schools has been hard on him. His foster mom says he loves
sports and he's pretty good at basketball. He wants to try out for the school
team next year but needs some professional guidance. There's a great basketball
camp this summer near his foster mom's office but his caseworker says the agency
has no money budgeted for summer programs. Eric could really use the one-on-one
attention and may meet some new friends as well. One week of sports camp costs
only $38
Shana loves music. She bangs on her grandmother's old piano and
sings at the top of her lungs. Grandmother would love to give her music lessons
but there's not extra money. When Shana's mother abandoned her last year,
Grandmother was more than happy to have Shana live with her but just the extra
mouth to feed is about all she can afford on her fixed income. There's a summer
music camp just down the street and Shana would be a perfect candidate.
Grandmother thinks she has real talent. But we may never know. Two weeks of
music camp costs $295
Darrell was so embarrassed when he was invited to a pool party just after
he came to live with his foster family last summer. He is eleven years old and
doesn't know how to swim. His parents are drug addicts and never cared about
taking their children to a park or a lake. Darrell didn't even know anyone with
a swimming pool. He had never ventured much farther than his own backyard
although he lived his whole life in a city surrounded by water. If only he could
go to summer camp because swimming lessons are included in the activity fees.
The foster family can pay part of the camp costs but they have 3 other foster
children who want to go to camp also. The weekly fee for the nearby day camp is
$90.
Tiffany is a 15 year child who has lived a life of abuse. She is currently
safe, and is being raised by a single mom who struggles with the stress of
finances and her daughter's abuse. Tiffany has little opportunity for
extracurricular activities. Following the abuse, she battled depression and
continues to struggle with socialization. She is receiving treatment and is just
beginning to branch out socially. She has expressed an interest in attending a
"Youth Summer Leadership Program" but with a tuition cost of $65, she is unable
to attend.
Your assistance in sending an abused or neglected child to summer camp can
have a life-long positive affect in the life of the child. Please help!
