Carmen's Story

Carmen’s voice was grim when she called HALOS. She was afraid. She didn’t know if she could raise her two younger brothers. She is only twenty years old.  Her husband’s job is 100% commission-based so the entire family depends on her cashier’s salary to make ends meet. Teen boys eat – a lot.

But Carmen was committed. She would do whatever it took to help her brothers.
 
To reduce disruption for her brothers, Carmen kept them enrolled at the same school. That means she drives them every day. After grief counseling, the boys’ grades are improving. They have support from teachers and friends who know them.

Thanks to donors like you, HALOS linked Carmen to legal services, utility assistance and clothing for her growing brothers. When she recently called, her voice was filled with pride and hope. “The boys are happier, and they’re thriving here. That’s all that matters,” she reported.
