When parents die or are not able to care for their children safely, relatives or family friends often step in to raise the child or children. This is kinship care. Over 57,000 (5%) of South Carolina's children live in kinship care, and 63,000 children live in grandparent-headed households.

Because family matters.

At HALOS, we help these children and their kinship caregivers in Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Beaufort, Jasper, Allendale, Hampton, Calhoun, and Orangeburg Counties. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, we improve the lives of these children.

“I am proud that I did not give up. There were times I wanted to because it was too overwhelming. But when you have a support system like HALOS, you can keep going.”
